When we need information, we all use Internet services.

The main goal of the Internet is to provide communication between users for information exchange. The Internet primarily was conceived as a tool for transmitting information. It is built around a system of domain names, which the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) created and manages. The key to searching for required information in the Inet is the domain name (or domain).

If you want to be found in the Web, you need to have your own website and domain name.

The structure of each domain name consists, at least, of two parts: a top-level (first level) domain name – a national or international one and the second-level domain name that serves for identifying a definite website. The domain names can also be of the third, fourth and subsequent levels.

Top-level international domain names – these are names of the “com” type – are reserved for commercial organisations, “org» is for non-commercial structures, and “edu” is for educational establishments.

The national top-level domain names identify the countries where they are registered: .ua – Ukraine; .us – USA; .de – Germany, etc.

The second-level national domain names consist of the country designation and the name of a specific website, e.g., imena.ua, inventa.ua, hostmaster.ua, etc.

Domain .ua was delegated to Ukraine in 1992. Since then, Ukraine has been having a network of second-level domains *.ua, with over 560 thousand domain names presently.

ICANN-certified organisations are involved in registering second-level domains. In Ukraine, such an organisation is LLC Hostmaster (www.hostmaster.ua) founded in 2001. This company is the sole administrator of the top-level domain .ua, and also registers and administers second-level domains ****.ua.

In this case, the requisite condition of receiving a second-level domain, according to the Rules of domain .UA, is that the applicant holds a registered trademark.

How to register a domain in Ukraine?

If you want to be registered in the segment .UA and receive a second-level domain name, first you need to be granted a trademark certificate in Ukraine for certain goods and/or services.

To register a trademark in Ukraine, the following is required:

  1. Design a word designation to be registered as a trademark.
  2. Determine the list of goods and services, for which the trademark will be used.
  3. Provide the particulars of the applicant in whose name the trademark will be registered.

Having received the information indicated in items 1-3, we draw up a draft cost estimate considering various approaches to registering a trademark in Ukraine and the options of registering a domain name in the segment .UA.

Depending on the agreed upon strategy and tactics of registering a domain name in the segment .UA, we perform a search for trademarks filed and registered in Ukraine.
